Corporate Social Responsibility – Our Commitment

We are committed to:

2015 Public Accountability StatementOur Public Accountability Statement illustrates our approach to corporate social responsibility across Canada, including financial contributions to Canada’s charitable sector.

Building Stronger Communities Together

Stronger Communities Together™, our national corporate citizenship program, is a framework to channel the commitment and care of our combined organization toward national, regional and local priorities in our communities. Through this program and in creative, co-ordinated efforts with Canada’s charitable sector, we contribute to sustainable change for the better. We believe that by sharing knowledge, resources and diverse perspectives, all stakeholders can together best address the issues our communities face.

We reinforce this commitment as a longstanding Imagine Caring Company supporting the principles of corporate citizenship and benchmarks for community investment established by Imagine Canada. We donate a minimum of one per cent of average pre-tax profits to non-profit, charitable and community organizations each year.

Engaging staff in the workplace and the community

We recognize community engagement begins in our own workplaces. With a well-supported structure to help our people address causes that matter to them in the communities where we live and work, our staff and distribution associates are able to give back as volunteers and community builders. Their energy and generosity are enduring features of our investment to address the urgent needs of vulnerable Canadians, and to help accomplish broader goals for community development and enrichment.

Managing our environmental impact

In our traditionally paper-intensive industry, we are reducing our use of paper by using electronic media wherever we can. Recycling and other environmentally responsible solutions are in place across our operations. Our real estate investment subsidiary is implementing progressive sustainability initiatives to reduce energy and water consumption, promote recycling and increase waste diversion at hundreds of properties.

Canada Life is among thousands of companies around the world taking part and working with CDP (the Carbon Disclosure Project). This international, not-for-profit organization is focused on helping companies disclose their impacts on the environment and natural resources and take action to reduce them.

CDP issues a score to indicate the level of reporting of a company's climate change initiatives. The two-part score measures how we factor climate change into planning, and how thoroughly we report on our operations. Our most recent score, for 2015, is 97B.

Our 2015 score has earned our Canadian operations leadership status on CDP’s Canada 200 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. The Index highlights companies that provide a high level of transparency in their disclosure of climate-related information.

We continue to focus on minimizing our environmental impact and reporting on our environmental management activities.

Promoting socially responsible investment

We offer a suite of socially responsible investment mandates that promote a high level of environmental sustainability, social responsibility and corporate governance. By applying established screens and criteria to investment mandates, we offer Canadians a meaningful way of ensuring that their investment dollars support socially responsible investments.

Helping Canadians plan for a healthy and secure future

We contribute to national solutions on meeting the fundamental needs of Canadians – such as affordable retirement and healthcare – by helping clients and the public with tools and information to lead healthier and more financially secure lives, through creative products and services for individuals and Group plan clients and members.

Building mentally healthier workplaces

Through the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace, we work with like-minded organizations to help expand the awareness of healthy workplaces to include psychological health and safety. Recognizing the enormous cost of mental health issues on society, business and families, through the Centre we offer free tools and resources to any employer interested in enhancing psychological health and safety in the workplace. Our organization recently played a key role in helping to establish the National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.
